HeroturkoHT

full-color photos throughout drawings 7 x 10 Easy-to-follow instructions for mastering the art Detailed, color photographs demonstrate each step Marquetry, the method used to create pictures from wood veneers, has changed little over the centuries, although the variety and availability of veneers have increased and cutting techniques have improved. Complete step-by-step photographs and illustrations guide craftpersons of all skill levels through the entire marquetry processfrom selecting the picture to making a border, mounting the picture, and finishing it. Separate sections cover the necessary tools and materials, the skills required, and the specific types of wood that can be used. And for woodworkers who master the basics, the book shows how to enhance veneers through parquetry, cutting veneers into geometric patterns; sand shading, using sand to change the color tone of wood; pyrography, using a pen to burn shapes on to a veneer; and cutting slivers, inserting thin strips of wood into background veneers.

Beginning SQL Queries is aimed at intelligent laypeople who need to extract information from a database, and at developers and other IT people who are new to SQL. The book is especially useful for business intelligence analysts who must ask more complex questions of their database than their GUIHeroturko–based reporting software supports. Building Dynamic Web 2.0 Websites with Ruby on Rails

Building Dynamic Web 2.0 Websites with Ruby on Rails
I have just cracked this book open and started skimming it. It looks like it might be a pretty good resource for Rails 1.2.6.

But version 2.0 of Rails was released four months before this book's publication date, and announced long before that. I'm very surprised that this book wasn't based on that current version. There are significant differences between Rails 1.2.6 and 2.0.

Most potential readers of this book should get one that covers Rails 2.0 instead.

Origami Design Secrets: Mathematical Methods for an Ancient Art

Origami Design Secrets
This book is a synthesis of origami technique, history, and instructions, with very thoughtful and clear explanations for almost every aspect of the art of folding and designing origami.

Brilliant Origami: A Collection of Original Designs

Brilliant Origami
This excellent origami book consists of a selection of original models designed by David Brill, Chairman of the British Origami Society and one of the most talented origami creators and folders in the United Kingdom.

Many of the pieces in the book are advanced but they are clearly diagrammed and will provide plenty of scope for creativity as many of the forms will be suitable for wet folding. Some can be worked in ordinary origami paper but many require very large sheets and I remember one year cutting a 20 inch equilateral triangle of foil for the Christmas Tree Fairy which in fact produced quite a small figure about six inches high!

This is therefore not a book for the beginner but it is certainly one which should be on any origami enthusiast's bookshelf. Models range from Mr Brill's Ship in a Bottle and the Lidded Box, to the Cigarettes in a Box and other geometric forms. There is also a whole variety of folds which are used in scenes in the photographs. These include St George and the Dragon and a wonderful Santa in a sleigh complete with reindeer!

Head First Design Patterns

Head First Design Patterns
You're not alone.

At any given moment, somewhere in the world someone struggles with the same software design problems you have. You know you don't want to reinvent the wheel (or worse, a flat tire), so you look to Design Patterns--the lessons learned by those who've faced the same problems. With Design Patterns, you get to take advantage of the best practices and experience of others, so that you can spend your time on...something else. Something more challenging. Something more complex. Something more fun.

You want to learn about the patterns that matter--why to use them, when to use them, how to use them (and when NOT to use them). But you don't just want to see how patterns look in a book, you want to know how they look "in the wild". In their native environment. In other words, in real world applications. You also want to learn how patterns are used in the Java API, and how to exploit Java's built-in pattern support in your own code.

You want to learn the real OO design principles and why everything your boss told you about inheritance might be wrong (and what to do instead). You want to learn how those principles will help the next time you're up a creek without a design pattern.
